No new case has been reported since June L97O. However, the situation ln Callfornia te stlll very serl.ous with'nert caaeg turnlng up almost daily. Rrmors are that L.2 to 1.5 nillion chickens are or will be involved in slaughter programs with'the poeelblllty of the nrnber rising A reviev of the situatlon ae lt occurred ln England in 1970 - 71 reveale that the slaughter program was not carried out but that an intinslve vaccLna-tion program nas instltuted. The English authoritles felt that slaughter was not the anslrer as it had failed for many years whlle the program ltas in effeet. We can only urge you to uae a sound vaccination program to protect your birdg against Newcastle dlseage. ltris cannot end when they go into the lay-ing house. If a nlld vacctne 81 - La Sota straine are used, revaccination .v-ry 60 days is highly deaireaEle as a long lasting durable irmrunity ie not produced especially by th"e 81 strain, The ltater route ie not congidered satls-iactory for adequate prot'ectlon. Spray or lndlvidual applicatlons are best. use a race uas tt ii] il;Tff;";s oN psrrrAcr* BrRDs a' Effective ilarch LO, L972, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) placed new improt restrictlons on all poultry lncludlng psittacine birds (parrots, macalts, mynaha, parakeets, cockatoos and others). Although the new USDA regulatlons are directed primarily toward preventing the intro-duction of Newcastle disease, they superimpose additional requirements on existing Public llealth Servlce regualtions concerning the importatlon of Psitt-acine bir{s. The new requirements given by IISDA are that all entering or returning. psittaeine birdsr-includlng personal peta, undergo isolation and approved medication for 45 days at a facillty located overaeas and approved by USDA. In addition, USDA requires a 30-day post entry laolatlon period in the U. S. tn approved faciLitl.es. Ports of entry for lncomlng btrds are now restricted to Honolulu, tos Angeles, Ml.aml, Netf, York, Seattle, as well as San Ysidro, California (for birde coming" fron Mexico) and Buffalo or Detroit (for birds cmlng fron Canada).
