At that time, we said we would have more to say about the book after we had reviewed it. The book is well written with excellent examples to illustrate a point he is trying to make. The book provides a good discussion of the basics involved in nutrition. This is important as one must understand these to apply nutrition, Probably the most important aspect is the book is written in language a layman will be able to understand. Altho, often books of this kind are difficult for the average person to understand. If there is one item which is lacking, it is an absence of a list of references which one might use for further study. protei ns and the s ugar probl em , problem, diet and heart disease and so what do we eat? There are other oven^,ei ght ch apters al so. To quote one smal'l item from the chapter on diet and heart disease one may see the way in which the book is written. - "By picking out only one aspect of this most complicated disease, that the risk of developing a heart attack is associated with the amount of cholesterol in the blood, many doctors, many medica'l organizations and much popular writing have done a great disservice to the public. They have produced a large number of hypochondriacs, and have diverted a vast amount of research talent and an astronomical amount of money from lines of research that, I am certain, wou'ld have been far more profitable." Mae Martha Johnson, our Extension Foods and Nutrition Specia'list said, "It was one of the most readab'le, comprehensive books she has seen on the subject." Arneri can Hea rt Assoc i ati on Stri kes Back At the cost of being accused of beating a dead horse, additional corments should be of interest regarding the Diet-Cho'lesterol-Heart disease controversy. An interesting reply to the paper reported 'last fall by Dr. Mann appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine for June 29, 1978. It was prepared by three members of the Nutrition Com-mittee of the American Heart Association. The paper is couched in conditional terms such as would, could, maybe, and physicians believe. Very little new, current research has included. It did not carry the typical AHA Diet Propaganda they have been giving out as the answer to the heart problem but indicated more research was necessary. The Jrost interesting sentence was the last one which is "A reasoned resolution of the con- -troversy is not currently possible." Is this a case of trying to save face? * Yudkin, John.
