Dear Mr. Tombaugh,
I am the comet hunter -from South Carolina. We met April'89
during lunch at the Hardees in Rock Hill, SC prior to your
presentation on discovering Pluto at the York County Museum. I
thought you would be interested to know that I -found my -first
comet. The long hours of searching paid off with the codiscovery
of 1989al, Comet Aarseth Brewington, on November 16th, 1989.
—^. This is also the first comet to be found from South Carolina.
Enclosed is an article from a local newspaper that tells
about the discovery. The photo shows my patrol telescope, Comet
Fever. It is an instrument of my own design and making,
including both primary mirrors (8 inch F-4.3 & 16 inch F-4.4 ).
I've also enclosed a photograph of 1989al that 1 took on December
21st at 6s10 AM using my 8 inch Schmidt camera. The exposure was
—> 60 seconds on 2415 hypered film. The comet was about 10 degrees
above the horiaon and the moon was three days past last quarter.
I know that you have told thousands of people about your
discovery of the planet Pluto, but probably few can even begin to
understand the thrill of discovering something new. Finding that
comet was the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me.
I think I know how you must have felt the day you discovered
Pluto.
My wife, Trudy, and I are seriously considering a move to
southern New Mexico, probably the Cloudcroft area, this coming
We vacationed there last June and fell in love with the
blue skies, mild climate, and natural beauty. We look
.rd to the many astronomical opportunities found in the
in and hope that our paths will cross again.
Wishing you clear
iew through your 16 inch F-10 telescope
