Dear Dr. Tombaugh:
Dr. Willy Ley has written a series of four articles on Mars for
the Tribune's Science Reading Series, which is a school-oriented
program that we carry during the school year and which last year was
used in 3»f?00 classrooms in our area as supplementary reading in
science in the secondary schools. Dr. Ley has been a regular contributor ever since we started the program five years ago.
To help illustrate one of his articles I would like to use a
drawing of the Martian surface which you apparently presented at the AAAS
annual meeting in Berkeley. First, of course, is the question of
whether you would have any objections to our use of it in connection
with the articles. Secondly, if you are agreeable, I would like a bit
of assistance in clearing up the outlines. The Associated Press
outlines make it appear that you may have found the features you show
on the Mariner IV photos., I think this is rather unlikely, but there
is enough doubt in my mind that I feel it should be cleared up before,
you willing, we use the picture.
To help you identify the specific picture I refer to, I made
a copy of it on oui> machine in the news room. The copy is not too
satisfactory, but should enable you to identify the drawing.
I hope you can see your way clear to giving us permission to use
the picture. We think we have a good program underway and illustration
is an important part of it. I am enclosing a brochmre to give you some
idea of what we are trying to do.
Anything that you can do will be deeply appreciated.
