NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 5 NUMBER 3 SEPTEMBER 1990 Charles Townley Appointed New Dean of NMSU Library Charles T. Townley, previously head of the Division of Library and Instructional Services of Penn State Harrisburg since 1979, became Dean of the New Mexico State University Library effective September 1. He is responsible for planning and implementation of library programs and services in the 800,000 volume library. He believes the NMSU administration and faculty are committed to developing library and information services, and that the materials budget is being increased to reflect the instructional, research, and service needs of NMSU and the region. Townley looks forward to working with the library staff who seem to be "absolutely first rate." His first major assignment will be to supervise construction of the new library facility. He feels the new building is an outward sign of commitment to knowledge at NMSU. From 1969 to 1972 Townley served as a serials librarian at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He worked as assistant director and later director of the National Indian Education Association Library Project from 1972 to 1975. He was a consultant to the U.S. Department of the Interior Libraries and lectured at the School of Information and Library Studies while pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Michigan from 1976 to 1979. Active in professional organizations, Townley currendy serves as secretary of the International Federation of Library Associations Section on Multicultural Librarianship. He is also chair of the Association of Research Libraries Research Committee and a consultant to the Office of Library Outreach Services. He has served as a councilor-at-large of the American Library Association. Townley received a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master's in library science in 1969 from the University of Oklahoma. He received a master's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1975 and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1983. His research interests include information use, library management and inter-organizational relationships.
