NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 4 NUMBER 1 JANUARY 1989 CHERYL WILSON, EDITOR LEIGH A. SHARP, TECHNICAL ASSISTANT HANKS TO THE VOTERS OF NEW MEXICO NMSU has a new library in its future. During the November 1988 general election voters approved the $45 million Educational Facilities General Obligation Bond Issue which included $11.1 million for a new library facility. We wish to express our thanks and gratitude to the University family and the many friends who contributed so generously of their time, effort and votes in support of the bond issue. You made the difference! Now That We Have the Money What Next? Continuing with the work that was done as part of the Library Building Feasibility Study in 1987, a building program statement and design guidelines have been completed. This information will be incorporated into a Request for Proposal (RFP) and supplied to instate architectural firms who, in turn, will submit bids for the project. Early spring has been targeted for preparing and distributing the RFP, reviewing interested architectural firms, and then forwarding the names of several acceptable firms to the Board of Regents for final selection. It is anticipated that from start to finish it will take approximately two years to complete the library building project. Planning for the New Library-- Several committees will play key roles with respect to the library building project. First, there will be an internal Library Building Committee that will work directly with the architect in the design and detailed plans on the functional layout of the facility. Members of this committee are: Lowell Duhrsen, Associate Dean; Bartley Harloe, Head, Collection Management; Valerie Horton, Systems Librarian; Anne Morgan, Head, Technical Services; Karen Stabler, Head, Information Services; Bonnie Wetzel, Library Faculty/Professional Staff Representative; Cheryl Wilson, Head, Special Collections; and Hiram Davis, Dean, Chairperson. In addition, the University Administration has appointed a Library Project Oversight Committee to review all plans and recommendations on the project and to make all final recommendations to the Executive Vice President Members of the committee are: Dr. Bruce Streett, Vice President, Development; Dr. Thomas Gale, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Lowell Duhrsen, Associate Dean, Library; Dr. Don Merrill, Chair, Faculty Senate; Professor Cheryl Wilson, Head, Special Collections; Professor Bartley Harloe, Head, Collection Management; and Hiram Davis, Dean, University Library (Chairper- To ensure campuswide input into the library building project and to keep the larger audience of library constituents up to date on the developments of the new library facility, there is a University-wide Library Building Advisory Committee. Members of this advisory group include: Dr. David Baron, Professor, Accounting & Business Computer Systems; Dr. Joseph Denk, Director, University Computer
