NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 6 NUMBER 2 APRIL 1991 CHERYL WILSON, EDITOR Library Week Events Highlight Literacy The New Mexico State University Library will be celebrating National Library Week's theme of "Literacy and Libraries" from Wednesday, April 24, through Saturday, April 27. Planned events include a children's story hour, literacy workshops, an information fair, a women's book fair, and an adult literacy colloquium featuring Virginia Mathews, nationally-known literacy advisor to the Library of Congress. According to Library Dean Charles Townley, "Our Library Week Celebration is intended to promote awareness of the wide variety of library and information services in the Las Cruces area. The NMSU Library is especially pleased to share sponsorship with the Dona Ana Branch Community College, Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, and the Las Cruces Public Schools. The Children's Story Hour will be held in the NMSU Library at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 24. Storytellers will include Barbara Medlin, Jennie Curry, and Opal Lee Priesdey. The story hour is free and open to the public. Free literacy workshops focusing on young children and youth at risk will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25. Advance registration for the workshops is required. Call the Library Development Office at 646-5781 for more information. Thursday will be capped with the Adult Literacy Colloquium at 7:30 p.m. in the Dona Ana Room in Corbett Center. Besides Virginia Mathews, colloquium speakers will include Stephen Bernhardt, NMSU Professor of English; Susan Sonflieth, Executive Director of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy; Susan Luces, Coordinator of Literacy Services at the Dona Ana Branch Community College; and Dean Townley. There will be a reception and refreshments after the The Information Fair will be held in the NMSU Library from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 26. Fair displays will demonstrate the latest information services provided by a variety of NMSU organizations including Agricultural Information, the Computer Center, the Child Care Referral Service, the Center for Educational Development, the University Archives, and the library's Government Documents, Reference and Special Collections units. The fair is free and open to the public. On Saturday, April 27, the Women's Studies Program will be sponsoring a Women's Bookfair in the courtyard of the NMSU Museum in Kent Hall from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The bookfair will feature books, art and music, is it free and open to the public, and the profits from the sate of books will go to the NMSU Women's Studies Program book fund.
