CITATIONS A* The Newsletter of the New Mexico Stale University Library Vol. 12, No. 3 October 1997 Researchers at Work: Dr. William C.Eamon Gwen Gregory ggregory@lib.m Dr. William C. Eamon, director ofthe Honors Program, actively researches the history of science and medicine and the history of Renaissance Italy. Driven by a keen interest in the philosophical and academic tradition ofthe sci- | ences, he focuses on medieval and early modern Italy. Currendy, Eamon's research centers on the 16th century Italian \ surgeon Leonardo Fioravanti, who was an important figure in the popular medicine of his time I Eamon's Fioravanti project has I taken him all over Italy. In his search for original source material on this lesser-known medical figure and how he influenced popular views of medicine, Eamon visited government-run archives in Florence, Venice, Rome, and other Italian cities. To help further with his research, he has created a database containing the names of more than 5 00 contemporaries Fioravanti mentions in his writings, and he searches for information by or about these people He has also traveled to the National Library ofMcdicine in Washington, DC, to study some of their manuscripts and rare 16th century medical books. For more general background reading and a NMSU Library's books and journals. He also relies heavily on our interlibrary loan services. Recently, he used the NMSU Library's University Archives/Rio Grande Historical Collections for photos and background information in preparation for renovation of the historic campus YMCA building, designed by Henry C. Trost. S ince joining the NMSU faculty in 1976, Eamon has seen definite changes in his research methods. In the beginning, he did not have funds to travel. He used the NMSU Library's collection of basic materials to research the "more conventional questions in the history of science". After locating references to articles and books in library indexes, he used interlibrary loan to obtain the items from other libraries. As he has become successful in obtaining grant funding, he is able to travel and use primary source materials in the U.S. and other a Library Hours Fall Semester 1997 Monday-Wednesday 7:30 am-12:00 midnight Thursday 7:30 am-9:00 pm 7:30 am-6:00 pm Saturday 12:00 noon-6:00 pm Sunday 12:00 noon-12:00 midnight For holiday hours or other information please call 646-5800.
