NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 6 NUMBER 3 SEPTEMBER 1991 CHERYL WILSON, EDITOR Bibliographic Instruction Sessions Introduce Students to the Electronic Library of the 1990's The days when students could go to the library and fumble through the card catalog to find what they need are long gone. In the electronic library of the 1990s and beyond, students do not simply need to know how to use a computer, they need to know how to use several computers and how to decide which computer is the best one for their topic. Today's students cannot be content with merely knowing how to locate the books, periodicals, and documents contained within the library's four walls, they also need to know how to use the library to access the huge universe of available information that exists outside the library proper. To help students meet the challenge of living in both an Information Age and an Information Society, the library offers a variety of instructional services to students. The most common type of instruction offered by the library is the course-related library instruction session. Much more than a tour, course-related library instruction sessions focus on the specific information needs of the students enrolled in a specific course. During course-specific instruction sessions library faculty educate students in the electronic and print sources they will use to carry out research in their subject Practical matters regarding the use of the library are also covered, as are appropriate library services such as Interlibrary Loan and Online Database Searching. Faculty who wish to arrange a course-related library instruction session should call the library at 646-4129. Calling well in advance is encouraged. Because of the growing popularity of the library's CD-ROM databases, the library offers free CD-ROM workshops. The 90- minute workshops highlight individual databases. In addition to teaching the search protocols and intricacies of a particular database, the sessions cover the principles of electronic information retrieval, and provide a framework for developing a search strategy, using boolean logic, in any online retrieval system. Goals of the workshops are to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of CD-ROM searching, as well as to increase students' information literacy and computer literacy. Faculty who would like to arrange a CD-ROM workshop for one or more of their classes may do so by calling 646-4129. Workshops may also be arranged by groups of interested students. CD-ROM workshops scheduled for September include: AB1/Inform and Compact Disclosure Tuesday, September 17 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25 1:30 p.m. Agricola (Agriculture) Monday, September 23 8:00 a.m. Monday, September 23 2:00 p.m. Compendex (Engineering) Thursday, September 26 4:00 p.m.
