Dear Dr. Tombaugh,
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory has awarded the Twenty-
Sixth Karl G. Jansky Lectureship to Dr. Alan R. Sandage a staff member at
the Observatories of Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sandage will deliver the Jansky
Lecture at 8:00 PM on Friday, November 1, at the Macey Center Auditorium
on the Grounds of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. The
lecture is entitled "The Quest for the Curvature of Space".
Dr. Sandage is well known for his observational effort to describe the
relationship between the time scale of cosmic phenomena and the spatial
scale over which they occur. His work inspired many of the fundamental
concepts in star formation, stellar evolution and the structure of galaxies,
including that of the Milky Way, and most recently in the size, age, and
evolution of the universe. Among the many awards given Dr. Sandage in
recognition of this work are the Warner and Russell Prizes of the American
Astronomical Society and the 1991 Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish
Academy.
You and your family are cordially invited to the Jansky Lecture and to
a reception which will follow in Macey Center (Upper Lobby). We look
forward to your attendance.
Sincerely,
