Dear Dr. Chamberlain:
I received your kind invitation of 7 September.
I apologize for this tardy response. I was straining to meet a deadline on
my manuscript to the publisher (which I mailed on 18 September). Patrick
Moore of England and I have prepared a semi-popular book on the discovery of
Pluto. Patrick wrote the prelude chapters on the discoveries of Uranus, the
asteroids and Neptune. I wrote the other 3/4ths of the book about Pluto. The
publisher is Stackpole Books of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They suggested the
title: "Out of the Darkness: The Planet Pluto", sub-title: "A Twentieth
Century Adventure of Discovery." It will be richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams.
My wife, Patricia, and I will be most happy to accept. The only thing that
concerns me is the cold weather in January at Chicago, in case that I am not
feeling up to par.
I have always wanted to visit the Adler Planetarium. I have seen it from an
airplane. As I remember, Adler was one (if not the first) of the first ones ii
the U.S. It is wonderful that you will celebrate its 50th anniversary. It is
an interesting coincidence with the first of the three plates that I took of
the Delta Geminorum region.
I would be most pleased to meet Dr. Robert Harrington, who worked with Dr.
James Christy on the discovery of Pluto's satellite, Charon.
As you probably know, I lived on a farm near Streator until I was 16. I still
have many relatives in the Streator area.
I have no conflict of date for 21 January 1980.
Again, thank you for your kind invitation to participate in the celebration
of your 50th anniversary.
Sincerely,
Clyde W. Tombaugh -)
