Dear Dr. Tombaugh:
It is our conviction that the space endeavor is essential to the
survival and normal development of mankind. If we conceive of the
universe as the natural environment for man's evolution, then the space
effort represents man's conscious effort to evolve. If this is true,
N.A.S.A. needs to recruit the minds and spirit of men in the accomplishment of this endeavor.
The Deerfield Foundation has therefore initiated The Center Letter
as a citizens'attempt to recruit the intellectual and cultural power of
those concerned with all aspects of the conscious evolution of man in
his natural environment. Clearly, this step forward is the concern of
all men, and in a free society, the active support of the citizen is
essential.
The Center Letter will try to help increase public awareness that
the human race has a vast new future because of our space effort and
without it, an increasingly limited horizon of hope. The Letter
directs attention of leaders in the arts, humanities, sciences, government
and religion, as well as in civic, cultural and philanthropic activities
to this new perspective of space. Its mailing list is world-wide and
includes many of those on the various frontiers of human endeavor whose
work indicates a direction for the future good of mankind. We give
greater resonance to their ideas and activities which can help free
man to do his best.
We will seek to communicate views on the moral, economic, social
and psychological reasons for man's further exploration of space. We
will search for the meaning of and seek new approaches to such critical
problems as the population explosion, the urban crisis, racial integration, war, from the perspective of space where it can be seen that
mankind is one interrelated whole. We will attempt to make relationships between the exploration of outer space and other disciplines that
tend to think of themselves as 'uninvolved' in man's evolution in the
universe. For it is our conviction that the improvement of life on
