Greetings from the Dean of the University Library
On behalf of the New Mexico State University Library faculty
and staff I wish to welcome returning (as well as new) faculty
and students to campus for the spring semester. We hope you
had a pleasant holiday period. As the new Dean of the University Library I look forward to our becoming better acquainted
during the course of the semester. The library staff and I
will continue our endeavours to serve your library and information needs to assist you in your teaching and learning
acti
ities.
There is one important aspect of the library on which we wish
to report to the University community. As many of you are
aware, the NMSU Library has been involved in a fifteen month
1 g Academic Library Development Program in consultation with
t. .; Association of Research Libraries' Office of Management
Studies. The Self-Study Team was composed of teaching faculty,
library faculty, and classified staff. The Study Team in the
course of its assessment of the library established five task
forces to assist in this undertaking. They included: Library
Facilities and Technology; Library Collections; Library Services.;
Library Management, Supervision, Staff Development and Personnel
Systems; and The Library in Its Environment. Each task force
was asked to gather and analyze information related to its
charge and to submit to the Study Team a working paper describing the present situation, recognizing strengths and weaknesses,
and suggesting ways the library could improve its performance.
The Study Team has issued its final report. It contains fifty-
one recommendations related to the above mentioned areas. The
report is a synopsis of task forces' findings and recommendations which the Study Team thought were most important. The
