Dear Dr. Tombaugh,
It was great having the opportunity to speak to you in
person over the phone, the other day .
I'm soory to hear of your difficulty breathing a
for better health . I hope to come down soon tc
you and Patsy before the summer is over .
I've been very busy lately with two projects : First I'm completing a screen-play
about my mother and her adventures with the O.S.S in world war II, and secondly
I've been organising the Santa Pe Childrens Observatory Project . I hope you got my last letter.
Enclosed is some information on what I am trying to do .
It is a wonderful cause very close to my heart .
As I had mentioned to you over the phone , I would be appreciative of
anything you could write in my behalf , expressing your interest and support of this
project . The idea came to me while hosting " Public night "
at your observatory at N.M.S.U. Although it was some years ago,I never forgot the
expressions and comments of the children who saw Saturn or the Orion Nebula for the first t
time . They are the inspiration to me for this project : to provide a place
free* of - charge where children could be introduced to Astronomy .
last
I hone you find the Nenclosed letter informative and if you have any questions
on this I am at your disposal . You have always been an inspiration
to me for your endless energy and enthusiasm in teaching others about astronomy .
You always have that child-like awe and wonder at the universe which it seems
many professionals in the field have lost .
I remember one of my teachers at N.M.S.U. who had never looked through
a telescope ! He was a Dure theorotician and worked only with computers .
To him a star was a bunch of numbers .
I also remember the incredible view of jupiter through your 16"
and your 9" which gave such crisp views that I wnted to throw away my commercially
built scope S
