Dear Folks:-
Just received Ma’s letter about an hour ago. Thanks. Your letter has considerably encouraged me. I take it that you have told Dr. Blount about my troubles, and that he has confidence in me.
In the meantime I have found out the cause of the troubles. The cause has not been due to my stomach directly. But instead, I found that my mouth became infected from liking lantern-slide binding in the making of lantern slides. Last Monday or Tuesday the thought occurred to me: “Last February I remember getting the sore mouth about 3 days after I did considerable “licking” labels & tags to put on packages to send to Mr. Lampland at Princeton University. These tags and bindings have on them ‘fish glue’ and is sure nasty tasting stuff. And you remember that I had a siege of sore mouth which I laid directly to my stomach. Well this time I helped E.C. Slipher make lantern slides of recent series of planetary observations to be shown at the (then) coming (now past) astronomical meeting at Albuquerque, New Mexico. You see they put a cover glass over the emulsion side of the plate to protect the film, and bind the edges of the two pieces of glass by ‘lantern slide binding.’
